Stuart Back, 35, from Guildford was reported to police after a friend found the "horrific photos". A mother has spoken of her family's distress at finding out her daughter's ex-boyfriend had downloaded sexual images of children. Stuart Back, 35, from Guildford, pleaded guilty to three counts of downloading indecent images of children and one count of possessing an extreme pornographic image or video.
He was sentenced to nine months in prison, suspended for two years, at Guildford Crown Court on April 5, avoiding an immediate jail term. The pictures were found on January 6, according to the court. Now, year-old Cathy Harding, from Guildford, has spoken out to condemn Back, who is her daughter's ex-boyfriend.
Mrs Harding told SurreyLive that when she first met Back, she considered him to be "friendly and chatty". But her view of him later changed. She said: "I wouldn't say I was shocked when my daughter first told me about the charges. The more I knew him, the more I felt he was a waste of space. When you go to court, it's very distressing.
Some of the photographs were extremely bad and my daughter had seen them. It's going to haunt her for the rest of her life. It really has affected us in a big way. She said the sentence handed out was "initially disappointing" as she believes he should be taken off the streets. She added: "It sends the message out that you can get away with this. If he's not going to be taken into prison, he should be known to the public.
Mrs Harding's daughter and Back split up about three years ago but still kept in contact, she said.
After they had separated, she said her daughter had seen indecent photos on his phone. He had claimed he saved them so he could report them to police, she said, but her daughter did not believe it. She insisted he report the images and, as far as she knew, he had done so.
In January this year, Back left his phone hanging around and a friend found the "horrific photos", Mrs Harding said. The phone was handed in to her daughter who reported Back to police, she said. Along with his suspended sentence, Back will be banned from working with children, deprived of his phone and computers, put on a sexual harm prevention order for two years and required to be on the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years.
